When Jesus was executed, his disciples thought it was the end of the story even though he had always promised them that on the
third day he would be raised.
He showed himself first to Mary Magdalene and then to many of his followers so that they might be witnesses to his resurrection
from the dead.
On Easter Sunday Christians rejoice, not only because Christ overcame death but because through him we too have the hope of
eternal life.
It is for this that we are giving thanks every time we celebrate the Eucharist.
Jesus Emerging from
the Tomb
Woodcarving over the
North choir stalls
'Forth he came at Easter,
like the risen grain,
He that for three days in the grave had lain,
Quick from the dead, my risen Lord is seen:
Love is come again,
Like wheat that springeth green.'
The risen Christ
breaking Bread with
His Disciples
Woodcarving over the
North choir stalls
'Child of Bethlehem -
house of bread;
Man of Jerusalem -
city of peace;
you have loved us
without limit or condition;
in our greatness and in our misery,
in our folly and in our virtue;
may your hand be always upon us
and may your heart be within us so that we too
may become bread and peace
for one another.'
'Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! by his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the
resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.'
